What is a 1.5mm Kidney Stone?
Kidney stones (also called renal calculi, nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. They can form due to a decline in urine volume or accumulation of toxic substances in the urinary system.
Kidney stones can come in various sizes, from 2mm to 4mm, from 7mm to 2 cm. This means they can be small crystals or large-sized stones. Their chances of passing through the urine depend on their size.
In this blog, we shall find out if 1.5mm kidney stones can be passed, and what treatment is needed to remove them.
1.5mm Kidney Stones:
Stones that are 2mm or less in size are easy to pass. They have an 80% chance of passing naturally, needing only about 8 days to pass. They can be treated using home remedies.
Here are the home remedies that can be used:
– Water Intake:
Drink at least 2 litres of water per day and check for colourless urine throughout the day.
– Check caffeine intake:
Track your caffeine intake. Have coffee in moderation only. Avoid colas and alcoholic beverages.
– High-fibre diet:
A high-fibre diet with low salt is advisable to treat small kidney stones. Avoid vegetables like tomatoes, beetroot, spinach, and nuts. Restrict the intake of protein according to your doctor’s prescription.
– Avoid processed food:
Try to avoid processed and packaged food with preservatives.
If they don’t pass, then another intervention is usually done. They are usually treated by SWL (Shock Wave Lithotripsy). In this procedure shock waves from outside the body are targeted at a kidney stone causing the stone to fragment. The stones are broken into tiny pieces.
Ureteroscopy is another treatment for kidney stones that don’t pass. It is an examination of the upper urinary tract, usually performed with a ureteroscope that is passed through the urethra and the bladder, and then directly into the ureter. These smaller 1.5mm stones in the bladder or lower ureter can be removed in one piece.
The Best Treatment for 1.5mm Kidney Stones:
In the majority of cases, 1.5 mm kidney stones can pass naturally. The patient only needs to take home remedies. Therefore, for most people with these small-sized stones, home remedies are the best treatments.
Only in the minority of cases would medical treatment be necessary. And between shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopy which one you should choose is something you need to discuss with your doctor.
